About Okinawa Goju-ryu Karatedo
In the Ryukyu Islands (present-day Okinawa Prefecture), the ancient art of karate, called Tee, was passed down from generation to generation, and developed around the Naha area, where it came to be known as Naha Tee.
Master Higaonna Kanryo is considered to be the forerunner of Naha Tee. Master Higaonna’s senior disciple was Master Miyagi Chojun, who later became the founder of Okinawa Goju-ryu Karatedo. Master Kai Kuniyuki went to Okinawa, the birthplace of karate, to train under Master Miyazato Eiichi and Master Iha Koshin, who were students of Master Miyagi Chojun.
Nakasone Tomonari studied under Shodai Kancho Master Kai Kuniyuki in 2012 and began studying Okinawa Goju-ryu Karatedo in 2013. On November 23, 2015, at the Okinawa Civic Hall in Okinawa, Nakasone Tomonari and Master Kai Kuniyuki simultaneously demonstrated “Suparinpei” and “Seisan,” resepctively, on the main hall stage at the Okinawa Prefecture Traditional Karate Exchange Demonstration (25th anniversary of Okinawa Karatedo RENGOKAI (Federation)).
The characteristics of Okinawa Goju-ryu Karatedo are “circular movements that make physically logical sense” and “strengthening and training of internal organs through a breathing technique using the abdominal breathing method.”
